I attended a session at the 4th Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights (AFSHR) talking about people living with disabilities and I was really touched. I realize that in Cameroon everything that is done at the level of sexual and reproductive health and rights (themes like violence against women; HIV/AIDS…), people living with disabilities are usually relegated to the backup plan, and even forgotten.
I also realize that as a peer educator myself I use to do work on sensitization in schools and youth associations but I never thought of rehabilitation centers.
Also, considering the fact that the percentage of violence against women that young women and girls living with disabilities are facing is higher than for able-bodied women and girls – the $1000 Young Visionaries contest grant, will help me to lead a special program targeting people living with disabilities and also orphans.
What actions are you taking to promote and protect the health and rights of women and young people worldwide?
I intend to mobilise some other peer educators and organize sensitization programs in rehabilitation centers and in orphanages with the aim to give them the right information on their health and their rights. I want to empower especially young girls with skills such as leadership and activism for a better integration into society; let them know about HIV/AIDS and the best ways to protect themselves.
And we will use materials such as video and book for death; audio for blind,illustration trough theater and story telling in orphanage;… to reach our target
What is your vision of lasting change for yourself and for the world's young people?
My vision of lasting change is a world where young people and especially young girls are seated at the table where decisions are made.
I want a world without any gender based violence, where all opinions count; a world were everybody can participate; a world without any discrimination.
If you could tell world leaders one thing, what would it be?
Youth are the world of today and the leaders of tomorrow.
