Announcing the Winner of the 2010 Young Visionaries Contest!

in Asia and the Middle East

In January, we launched our Young Visionaries contest to celebrate, acknowledge, and support the exceptional and ongoing work of young advocates around the world. Over the span of two months, more than 70 young people from 26 countries shared their visions for securing a  just and healthy life for women and young people, and competed for a $1000 grant to fund a project that works toward this vision.

We are very excited to announce the winner of the 2010 Young Visionaries contest, Sunita Basnetof Nepal. At 24, Sunita has already witnessed some of the harsh realities women face when communities fail to promote and protect their sexual and reproductive rights and health. With the grant from IWHC, Sunita will support a local campaign for free health care, and the production of an educational street drama designed to raise awareness about health and rights.

Our judges were impressed, and we agree, by Sunita’s “very strong commitment to IWHC’s goals,” as well as her “strong sense of self” and “engagement with communities of youth.”  They also noted that her project strategies are community based and inclusive, which is very important, and were excited about her “creative ways of bringing information and education to a large number of people.”

Stay tuned on Akimbo for details on Sunita’s progress as she develops her project, and check out this video to learn more about your 2010 Young Visionary!
