This morning a special issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine was released, containing a 118 page report on the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB). With a study group of nearly 6,000 participants between the ages of 14 and 94 readers get a comprehensive glimpse at what the average American is doing in (and out) of bed. Needless to say, they found some interesting things.
But of all the headlines that can be derived from one of the largest studies on sex in America in years, the most exciting is that condom use has now become the norm for young people: Nearly 80% of boys and 60% of girls under the age of 18 said that they had used condoms during sex. That’s nearly twice the rate at which young adults used condoms, and nearly four times that of adults over 40.
These findings not only have huge implications for global public health policy and current efforts to promote condom use, but they also debunk the idea that young people are reckless and careless when it comes to sex. In fact, it even looks like they could teach their parents a thing or two.
